Haverfordwest is the largest urban area of the county of Pembrokeshire, Wales. In recent years it’s population has been around 12000 – 15000 people. In the mid 1800s, the population was closer to 3000.
The town of Haverfordwest is divided by the River Cleddau, with most of the area on the right bank. The suburbs of Prendergast and Carlett are situated on the left bank.
In Welsh, Haverfordwest is written as Hwlffordd. The meaning is ‘ford used by heifers’ or ‘ford used by goats.
Haverfordwest has for centuries been a market town. The town has always been English speaking, but the Welsh language has always been spoken due to the many visitors to the markets.
The historic town is watched over by the Haverfordwest Castle which is located in the centre of town. The castle was built in the 12th century, but most of the architecture that is still standing dates from 1290.
